Direct data transfer between SOAP web services in Orchestration

In scientific data analysis, workflows are used to integrateand coordinate resources such as databases and tools. Workflowsare normally executed by an orchestrator that invokescomponent services and mediates data transport betweenthem. Scientific data are frequently large, and brokeringlarge data increases the load on the orchestrator and reducesworkflow performance. To remedy this problem, we demonstratehow plain SOAP web services can be tailored to supportdirect service-to-service data transport, thus allowingthe orchestrator to delegate the data-flow. We formally definea data-flow delegation message, develop an XML schemafor it, and analyze performance improvement of data-flowdelegation empirically in comparison with the regular orchestrationusing an example bioinformatics workflow.
